The University of British Columbia (UBC) International Leader Award recognizes and supports international students who demonstrate outstanding academic achievement, leadership skills, student business involvement and recognized achievements in areas such as the arts performance, sport, debate or creative writing.

Eligibility Criteria for the University of British Columbia (UBC) Award

  • You must be an international student studying in Canada with a Canadian study permit.
  • Must enter UBC from an accredited high school or transfer from the first year of a post-secondary college or university.
  • You must have finished high school no earlier than one year before the academic year you are applying for. For example, applicants for the winter 2024 session must have graduated from high school no earlier than November 2022.
  • One must apply for his first university degree. – Must demonstrate superior academic performance (all A levels or equivalent).
  • Must demonstrate a level of financial need that would otherwise prevent the pursuit of a UBC degree.
  • Must meet UBC admission requirements, including general and degree-specific requirements and English admission standard.

Award Benefits

Financial support: The scholarship provides financial assistance proportionate to the student’s demonstrated financial need, up to the total cost of tuition and living expenses for the duration of the undergraduate program.

Renewable: The scholarship is renewable for a maximum of three additional years of university study, provided the recipient maintains a satisfactory academic standing in their faculty and continues to demonstrate financial need.

The International Scholars Program Awards

There are four need-based and merit-based award categories available through the UBC International Scholarship Program.

You don’t choose the award you want to receive when you submit your application – the team will automatically consider you for the awards you’re eligible for.

  • Karen McKellin International Leader of Tomorrow Award:
    This award recognizes outstanding international students who demonstrate superior academic achievement and exemplary leadership skills who support and empower others through collaboration, empathy and active listening. It recognizes students who have made a positive impact through their participation in various school and community service projects and initiatives and who have achieved notable results in other academic or extracurricular activities.
  • Donald A. Wehrung International Student Award:
    This award recognizes outstanding international students from impoverished or war-torn regions who have achieved academic excellence under difficult circumstances and who would not be able to attend university without significant financial aid.
  • International Impact Award:
    This award is given to outstanding students who have demonstrated leadership, commitment and solutions to sustainability and climate change, conservation and management of natural resources, social justice, equity and inclusion, or health and well-being of the community. Preference is given to first-generation students and those from diverse backgrounds.
  • Vantage One Excellence Award:
    This award is offered by UBC Vantage College to academically outstanding international students who have not yet met the English language entry standard for direct entry to UBC. The value of the scholarships can reach the total cost of the student’s study program and living expenses. Students must demonstrate leadership skills, significant involvement in student affairs and community service, and notable achievement in other academic or extracurricular activities.

How to Apply

  • Students must be nominated by their current school or a recognized non-profit organization. Each school may nominate multiple students, but each student may be nominated for only one scholarship based on need and merit.
  • Collect the required financial information and notes on extracurricular activities and scholarships.
  • Apply to UBC on the official website by December 1, 2024, the anticipated admission deadline, and specify your interest in the scholarship on the UBC application.
  • Nominated students will receive an email with detailed instructions on how to access and complete the scholarship application, including submitting a personal statement, letter of reference and documentation of financial need.
