Eamon Molloy Memorial Scholarship is a University of Canterbury Scholarship, it is a partially funded scholarship for international students. This scholarship is available for high school students. The scholarship provides financial aid of $10,000.
The purpose of this scholarship is to support full-time Asian students at the University of Canterbury.
In 2010, a profound tribute to life and legacy of Eamon Mark Paul Molloy QSM took shape with the establishment of a scholarship. This scholarship owes its existence to the generous contributions received from international students, all commemorating the memory of an exceptional individual.
Immersed in the Saint-Vincent-de-Paul society through various functions, Eamon exemplified his commitment by trying to support the disadvantaged. His altruistic spirit shone through in the 1960s, when he began helping many foreign students and immigrants. Eamon has become a guiding force for these people, facilitating their integration into New Zealand society, providing them with permanent accommodation and introducing them to the local way of life. As a tutelary figure, he oversaw the overall well-being of many international students in Christchurch, going above and beyond the call of duty to ensure their well-being.
His prayer does not stop there. In the late 1960s and 1970s, Eamon took up an advisory role in the Canterbury Malaysian and Singaporean Students’ Association. He played a vital role in helping Indochinese refugees arriving in New Zealand, working tirelessly to reunite separated families in refugee camps. Often faced with bureaucratic and administrative obstacles, Eamon devoted days to extensive research and correspondence, ensuring families were reunited. Even in his 80s, he remains actively involved in welcoming ethnic minorities, continuing his legacy of compassion.
Eamon Molloy’s life of service spanned more than 50 years, leaving an indelible mark on the community, especially ethnic communities. His dedication was recognized shortly before his death in November 2009 when he received the Queen’s Service Medal. His desire to preserve his memory in a meaningful way led to the creation of this scholarship, a testament to his lasting impact on many lives.

Eligibility Criteria for Eamon Molloy Memorial Scholarship
To be eligible for the Eamon Molloy Memorial Scholarships, the applicant must meet all of the following requirements:
Required language: English.
Eligible places: Asian students at the University of Canterbury
Applicants must be
(1) citizens of Bangladesh, Cambodia, India, Indonesia, Lao People’s Democratic Republic, Malaysia, Mongolia, Myanmar, Pakistan, People’s Republic of China, Philippines, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, Thailand, East Timor or Vietnam, or
(2) holders of Hong Kong permanent identity cards. Applicants must also not be Aotearoa New Zealand citizens or Aotearoa New Zealand residency visa holders.
Selection will be based on:
academic achievement;
financial needs; And
leadership and personal qualities that demonstrate the applicant’s potential to succeed in life, as demonstrated by a personal statement outlining their attributes, achievements and ambitions.
Recipients must be full-fee international students enrolled full-time at the University in their second, third or fourth year of an undergraduate program. The scholarship is valid only for one year.
The scholarship is valid with any other scholarship unless the terms of the latter prohibit it.
In the event that the registration of a beneficiary for the year of the mandate no longer meets the conditions
The pursuit of the scholarship is conditional on satisfactory academic progress and compliance with the statutes and regulations of the University.
