Commonwealth Scholarships

Scholarships (Commonwealth Scholarships) are for talented people who have the potential to make a difference. CSC offers approximately 800 graduate and professional development scholarships each year.

Most CSC scholarships are funded by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office. Commonwealth Scholarships and Bursaries offer talented and motivated individuals the opportunity to enhance their knowledge and skills in their field to contribute to sustainable development in their country.

All scholarships are partially funded by UK host universities.

UK Research and Innovation (UKRI)

UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) is a non-departmental public body Launched in April 2018, and sponsored by the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT).

UKRI provides funding to researchers, businesses, universities, NHS bodies, charities, non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and other institutions.

UKRI provides £2bn of direct funding to institutions. More than 90% of this is given as a single annual grant to universities in England.

Funding is available in the form of:

  • grants to researchers or groups of researchers in a specific project
  • scholarships for individual researchers
  • scholarships for those starting their postgraduate research
  • support for essential research activities, including international travel, equipment procurement and networking.

Researchers can work alone, in groups of experts at their university, or in cross-border collaboration, in specialized institutes and with companies and charities.

Research organizations can also apply for funding to create or develop facilities, laboratories, equipment and infrastructure.

Gates Cambridge Scholarships

The Gates Cambridge Trust was established in October 2000 with a historic gift of $210 million from the Gates Foundation to the University of Cambridge.

Each year, Gates Cambridge offers approximately 80 scholarships to outstanding applicants from outside the UK to pursue a postgraduate degree in any subject available at the University of Cambridge. About two-thirds of these scholarships will be offered to doctoral students, with about 25 scholarships available under the US cycle and 55 available under the international cycle.

A Gates Cambridge Scholarship covers the full cost of studying at Cambridge and also provides additional discretionary funds.

Wellcome Trust Doctoral Studentships

The Wellcome Trust was founded in 1936, in accordance with the wishes of Henry Wellcome, to improve health by supporting scientific research and the study of medicine.

This program allows scholars to do a PhD in humanities or social sciences in any field of health.

Rhodes Scholarships

Clarendon Scholarships are awarded to academically outstanding students with the best proven and future potential.

Like all fully funded Oxford scholarships, the Clarendon covers course fees and provides a generous stipend for living costs. This funding helps reduce the financial barriers that can prevent the world’s best students from coming
