Dingledine-Bluestone Scholarships

James Madison University is pleased to offer talented students who aspire to graduate from a prominent Norwegian university the Dingledine-Bluestone Scholarships.

With Thomas A. Dingledine’s help, the Dingledine-Bluestone Scholarship was created to recognize and aid James Madison University students who genuinely want to make a difference in the lives of others.

The Dingledine-Bluestone Scholarship is awarded in appreciation of outstanding involvement, leadership potential, and academic achievement.

The Dingledine-Bluestone Scholarship for first-year students will pay for four years of in-state tuition and fees if all requirements are met (see below). This amount is $12,638 for the 2021–2022 school year.

The scholarship is given out annually by the Dingledine-Bluestone Academic Selection Committee of the James Madison University Honors College.

One Dingledine Bluestone scholarship will be awarded by the Honors College this year.

Applicants may be both in-state and out-of-state freshmen who meet the requirements and plan to enroll at JMU’s Honors College for the fall semester.

Domestic applicants who wish to attend James Madison University and obtain a bachelor’s degree are eligible for the program.

James Madison University

James Madison University, also referred to as JMU, Madison, or James Madison, is located in Harrisonburg, Virginia. Established in Harrisonburg as an Industrial School for Women, James Madison University was founded in 1908.

In honor of President James Madison, an American statesman, diplomat, and Founding Father who led the nation as its fourth president from 1809 to 1817, the institution renamed itself Madison College in 1938.

He is regarded as the “Father of the Constitution” because to his significant role in the drafting and support of the US Constitution and the Bill of Rights.

“Being the Change,” the motto of James Madison campus, was created to capture the idea that every member of the campus community will discover their own way to change the world.

The motto of the university, “Be the change you wish to see in the world,” was influenced by Mahatma Gandhi. Teachers, students, alumni, and sponsors have all embraced the goal of changing the world from the university’s founding.

  • Qualification Standards: For the applicants to be qualified, they must meet all requirements:
  • The scholarship will be awarded in accordance with a candidate’s record of leadership, community involvement, and academic achievement.
  •  Candidates must rank in the top 20% of their class and have a 1250 SAT score, or they must be in the top 20% of their level with a 3.6 overall GPA.

How to Apply

How to Apply: Students must be admitted to the university’s bachelor’s degree program in order to be considered for admission to the program.

You can download the application and mail it to James Madison University MSC 0109 100 East Grace Street Harrisonburg, VA 22807 once your request has been granted.

As supporting material, the university may request two recommendation letters, an official high school transcript, and two essays.

Admission Requirements: To be eligible to apply for admission, you must have an outstanding prior degree certificate.

Language Requirement: Candidates’ proficiency in written and spoken English is required.

Benefits: James Madison University will cover the award sum of $12,206 for tuition during a four-year period.

Criteria

Candidates who are competitive must either have an 89 on a 100-point scale or a cumulative GPA of 3.6 on a 4.0 unweighted scale; OR they must have an ACT score of 27 (composite only) or a writing-only SAT score of 1250 out of 1600.

If you choose to fulfill this criterion, you must send your test results officially from the testing organization, and James Madison University must receive them by November 15th.

Maintaining Your Eligibility

  • All Dingledine-Bluestone Scholars must be enrolled full-time Honors College students in good standing for the duration of the grant.
  • A minimum 3.0 GPA is required each year; • All honorees are invited to participate in the Leadership and Service programs offered by the Honors College.

Apply for the Scholarship

  1. Apply to JMU: We strongly encourage you to complete your early action freshman application since it is a requirement in order to access the computerized scholarship application.
  2. Apply to the Honors College– We strongly encourage you to complete your early action Honors College application before the deadline, as you must apply in order to be eligible for the Dingledine-Bluestone Scholarship.
  3. After submitting an early action application to JMU, you can access the Madison Scholarships Hub, which is the online platform for most scholarships at JMU, including the Dingledine-Bluestone Scholarship.
  4. Get your materials ready so you can just cut, paste, or attach them when you submit your application, saving you time when entering information.
  5. You must write two essays.

Essay Guidelines:

When asked, copy and paste your answers to the following questions into the supplied area. You should not write your name, date of birth, student ID, or any other personally identifiable information on your contributions.

  • First essay: Talk about and describe a time when you were forced to make a significant decision. Explain the sources of the pressure, how you arrived at your decision, and the effects of that decision.
  • Would you take the same route again today? (No more than 250 words)
  • Second Essay: Choose a volunteer or leadership experience and describe how it relates to your desire for a better society. How are you going about realizing your goal of making people’s lives better right now? In what way do you see yourself realizing your dream in the future? (No more than 250 words)
  • You must include a copy of your unofficial high school transcript, which should include your senior schedule. This file (in.pdf format) will be uploaded by you via the Madison Scholarships Hub as a component of your application. NOTE: You are required to provide an official transcript with your freshman application.
  • As directed in your application, compile a bulleted list of your volunteer activity, leadership responsibilities, and successes.
  • When asked, provide a bulleted list of your honors, recognitions, and distinctions in academia.

6. The application will be accessible starting on October 1. When you’re ready to go in to Madison Scholarship Hub and submit an application.

7. Complete and send in the application for a general scholarship.

8. You can find the Dingledine-Bluestone Scholarship application under “Recommended Opportunities.” Click Apply to start the application process.

9. To view the Dingledine-Bluestone Scholarship, click on “Opportunities” and choose “Ours” from the drop-down menu if it is not displayed. You will then be able to access the scholarship.

10. Click Apply to start the application process.

Notification

  • This school year, the Honors College will offer one Dingledine-Bluestone award.
  • We will notify all candidates of their results following the finalist interviews in January.
  • We plan to distribute these communications by the end of February. We appreciate your patience as we work on this.
  • The only scholarship offerings that are not combinable are the Dingledine-Bluestone Scholarship, the Madison Award for Academic Excellence, the Madison Recognition Awards, the First Generation Scholarship, the Second Century Scholarship, the Centennial Scholarship, and Fellowship Offers. If students are offered multiple merit-based rewards, they must choose one and decline the other offer (s).
